39th EAIR Forum Porto 2017

Under pressure?

Higher education institutions coping with multiple challenges

Welcome to the University of Porto

The University of Porto is very glad to host the 39th EAIR Annual Conference in September 2017. We are doing everything within our reach to make sure that the participants have a pleasant stay in Porto. I am confident the University of Porto will honour our city’s tradition of hospitality, which is known for welcoming its visitors with warmth.

The University of Porto was formally established in 1911, but its origins date back to the 18th century. Today it is the second largest Portuguese university. With more than 30,000 students, the University of Porto is made up of 14 faculties covering all major areas of knowledge. The university is also the academic partner of a business school, in association with the major companies and institutions of the region.

The University of Porto has 35 certified research units and nine major interface institutes, being responsible for more than 20% of the Portuguese scientific production indexed in the Web of Science. Several indicators of academic quality show continuous progress over the years and, in particular, a consolidated reputation at the national and international level.

This being said, we would like to invite all participants of the 39th EAIR Annual Conference to enjoy the architectural heritage and the cultural and human wealth that our city and university have to offer. Porto is a historic city full of surprises where visitors can find traces from the Roman period, the World Heritage riverfront medieval district, many Romantic and Baroque works of art, neo-classical and neo-gothic buildings, some of the finest contemporary architecture and the monumental bridges linking the banks of the Douro River.
